- Topic: About Studienkolleg

Studienkolleg entrance exams in Germany assess international students’ readiness for preparatory courses required for university admission. These exams typically test German language proficiency and subject-specific knowledge, depending on the chosen track. At BIC we do not have an entrance exam. Only your previous academic record and English language level is assessed. At German state Studienkollegs passing the entrance exam is essential for securing a place in a Studienkolleg, making it a crucial step for students planning to study in Germany without a recognized secondary school qualification.

What’s an entrance exam?
Most Studienkollegs, whether public or private, require an entrance exam.
The exam usually includes German and other subjects such as mathematics or natural sciences. The duration is usually three hours. Admission depends on test results, language level, and the number of available places.
At BIC we do not require an entrance exam.
Why are there entrance exams?
Entrance exams exist because places at Studienkollegs in Germany are limited. This is especially true for public Preparatory Colleges. They usually charge only a small administrative fee instead of high tuition fees. As a result, around 12,400 people take the entrance exam each year with only 3,500 succeeding in passing. This is an acceptance rate of only around 28%! The entrance exam ensures fair selection and helps identify students who are academically and linguistically ready to succeed at Studienkolleg and university.
Did you know? German state Studienkollegs are extremely difficult to get into.
Private Studienkollegs such as BIC offer a much easier pathway to studying at a university in Germany. To find out more about Studienkollegs in Germany click below!
Does BIC have an entrance exam?
No, BIC does not require an entrance exam. We believe that students who meet the formal admission requirements deserve a fair chance. Instead of testing before enrollment, we assess progress during the program through assignments and continuous evaluation. Our final exams are demanding, but we focus on supporting and guiding students step by step to help them succeed.
What is tested?
Most Preparatory Colleges offer their preparation courses only in German. The usual German language level required to be accepted at a state Preparatory College is B2. This ensures that students are aptly able to understand their classes in German. Studienkolleg entrance exams usually test two things: your German and your academic basics. The German part may also include grammar, vocabulary, reading, and a short writing task.
For the T-course, M-course, or W-course, many Preparatory Colleges add a math test. Math is school level: fractions, percentages, equations, functions, and geometry. Some tracks may add English or social-science questions. The Studienkolleg entrance exam is mainly written and sometimes includes a short oral interview. Total time is often about 1–3 hours. Exact content and rules vary by Studienkolleg.
What are the requirements to take the entrance exams?
To take the Studienkolleg entrance exam in Germany, applicants must hold a foreign secondary school certificate that is not equivalent to the German Abitur. All documents must be officially translated and certified. In addition, German language proficiency at B1–B2 level is required. Depending on the Studienkolleg, applicants may need to pass a language placement test before the entrance exam.
How can I apply for an entrance exam?
To apply for the Studienkolleg entrance exam, candidates must submit their application online or by post to the chosen Preparatory College or via uni-assist, depending on the institution. Required documents usually include academic certificates, transcripts, proof of German language proficiency, and a valid passport. Deadlines may vary by Studienkolleg.
When do entrance exams take place?
Entrance exams usually take place twice a year, before the start of the winter and summer semesters. Most exams are held between May–July for the winter semester and December–January for the summer semester. Exact dates should be checked individually.
Are there studienkollegs without entrance exams?
Yes, there are Studienkollegs without entrance exams, mainly private Studienkollegs. Most of them only offer German-taught preparation courses. Instead of an exam, admission is usually based on your school certificates and German language level (often B1 or B2). However, these institutions charge tuition fees, while public Studienkollegs almost always require an entrance exam.
