The TU Chemnitz Campus

TU Chemnitz places a strong emphasis on networking. An example of this is found in the Smart Systems Campus, which was built near the university campus and is now the location of the newly-constructed Institute of Physics, including a cleanroom at the Center for Microtechnologies, as well as the Fraunhofer-Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS, a 'start up' developing industrial real estate. On the international level, TU Chemnitz cooperates with 126 partner institutions in 39 different countries. This includes 19 members of the international university network 'Academic Consortium for the 21st Century' (AC21).

The university prioritizes its students: Ensuring effective and relevant teaching in association with distinguished alumni are qualities proudly and actively supported by the university. This has resulted in a comprehensive quality assurance initiative, in which the TU Chemnitz is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the context of the project 'Teaching Quality Pact,' as well as by Saxony's Center for Teaching and Learning, funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts.

In order to enhance the city of Chemnitz as well as contribute to the environment of its university students, the historic 'Alte Aktienspinnerei' ('Old Spinning Mill') will be reconstructed to serve as a new Central University Library. Furthermore, other university institutions will soon be better coordinated with tram routes as part of a reorganization of the public transport system--the so-called 'Chemnitz Model.' In 2012, TU Chemnitz was awarded distinction for the third time as a family-friendly university.


TU Chemnitz stands for excellence and outstanding research. Within the key research areas 'Energy-efficient Production Processes,' 'Smart Systems and Materials,' and 'Human Factors in Technology,' solutions to the challenges of tomorrow are being developed. TU Chemnitz has established itself as research hub of international renown for cutting edge value-adding processes.

A representative example of the university's competitiveness is found in the key research area 'Energy-efficient Production Processes,' as part of the Federal Cluster of Excellence 'Merge Technologies for Multifunctional Lightweight Structures' (MERGE). Funded with 34 million Euros, this cluster is the only one in Germany focusing on the trend-setting technology field of 'lightweight engineering.' The foundation for this extraordinary development was set by the Saxon State Cluster of Excellence 'Energy-efficient Product and Process Innovations in Production Engineering' (eniPROD), which was jointly established with the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU. These competencies are complemented by additional collaborative research areas that are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which develops intelligent materials and energy-efficient production technologies.

Within the key research area 'Smart Systems and Materials,' scientists at TU Chemnitz are also involved in the Federal Cluster of Excellence 'Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden' (cfAED). Further input is provided by the Nano System Integration Network of Excellence (Nanett), funded by both the Federal Government as well as by the high-performance cluster COOL SILICON 'Energy Efficiency Innovations from Silicon Saxony.' Several DFG Research Groups are working in this field. In addition, TU Chemnitz will be home to the 'Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes' (MAIN), one of its kind in Europe.

TU Chemnitz is characterized by trans-disciplinary cooperation--such as in the key research area 'Human Factors in Technology.' Examples can be found in the Competence Center 'Virtual Humans' and the DFG Research Training Group 'Connecting virtual and real social worlds.' Additionally, a range of Young Researcher Groups offer excellent funding and career conditions for nascent researchers. Several of them feature numerous international staff, such as the International Research Training Group 'Materials and Concepts for Advanced Interconnects and Nanosystems,' operated by TU Chemnitz in cooperation with Chinese partner universities.
