Location of the Jade University of Applied Sciences

The Jade University of Applied Sciences’ faculties are spread over three campuses in Germany: Wilhelmshaven, Oldenburg and Elsfleth. The Departments of Engineering, Economics and IT are situated in Wilhemshaven, the Oldenburg campus houses the Departments of Architecture and Construction and Geoinformation and Elsfleth is home to the Department of Maritime Studies. They are all situated along the river Jade, the namesake of the institution. Consequently, students at all three campuses equally benefit from the presence of many marine-related businesses as well as from the recreational opportunities the direct connection to the North Sea offers.

Distinguishing factors

Excellence in teaching is the central aim of the Jade University of Applied Sciences and therefore ingrained into all departments and degree programmes. Thus, all lecturers are not only academically qualified teachers, but also possess far reaching business experiences. The exposure to practical experiences is further supported from the first term onwards through project work and mandatory internships. The small group sizes and the personal attention every student receives have an equally positive effect. The aim of all degree programmes is to equip each student with skills that will later enable them to lead a successful career in Germany as well as in any other country they may choose to go to.

Specialisations of the university

Maritime Studies is one of the Jade University of Applied Sciences‘ areas of specialisation, partly by default, due to the location of the three campuses directly at the German coast of the North Sea. However, the university also possesses a particular expertise and research interests in the areas of energy, mobility and trade, construction and information.

Campus life in Wilhelmshaven

About 4000 students of the Jade University of Applied Sciences’ study here, whereby Wilhelmshaven is its largest campus. The city is especially attractive to students and tourists alike, because of its location at the only south-facing beach of the German North Sea coast and the beach promenade that runs along it. Further attractions of the city are the museums, whose exhibition themes are often influenced by the proximity to the sea, the virtual underwater world, the JadeWeserPort and the natural science research centres.

Campus culture in Oldenburg

Oldenburg represents the cultural centre of the region, due to the wide ranging cultural programme it offers, e.g. the 20 museums and galleries or the State Theatre. The city is also viewed as the regional education centre, as several other universities aside from the Jade University of Applied Sciences have campuses here. Resulting from this, the about 2000 Oldenburg Jade students are offered a broad programme of events and activities particularly aimed at students. Examples of this are the annual Kultursommer and film festival, the pub culture and the student nights, on which students are granted special reductions.

Campus culture in Elsfleth

Elsfleth, where about 700 students are based, is the smallest of the Jade University of Applied Sciences' campuses. The campus radiates the same open and neighbourly atmosphere that is typical for the entire town and its 10.000 inhabitants. Equally characteristic for the city’s culture is the seafaring and fishing tradition that is still alive today. This history is also the reason for the high density of marine-related businesses and research clusters in and around Elsfleth.
